Believing the Bible

We value the Bible as God's authoritative Word, study it together, and build our lives on its truth.

Following Jesus

We value wholehearted obedience to Christ Jesus through the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit.

Belonging to the Community of Faith

We value integrity in relationships and mutual accountability in an atmosphere of grace, love, and acceptance.

Serving Compassionately

We value serving others at their point of need, following the example of our Lord Jesus.

Living Simply

We value uncluttered lives, which free us to love boldly, give generously, and serve joyfully.

We value an active and loving witness for Christ to all people.

Pursuing Peace

We value all human life and promote forgiveness, understanding, reconciliation, and non-violent resolution of conflict.

Relying on God

We confess our dependence on God for everything, and seek to deepen our intimacy with him by living prayerfully.

Our story

Our church began out of the vision of 3 sisters from the Heise Hill BIC church in Stouffeville, Ontario in the 1920's, as they saw a need for a Sunday School outreach to the Oak Ridges community. The eventual church grew while meeting at the local school, before beginning construction on our own building in 1954.

In April of 1955, the new building at 8 Aubrey Avenue officially became the home to our church. This building was later expanded in 1994-1995 to its current size and shape.

Our leadership

Lead Pastor

Greg Whyte
(Alicia, Renae, Luther)

The Whytes joined us in December 2024 as our pastoral family. Before becoming our pastor, Greg was working on his PhD in Intercultural Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary. He is also a graduate of Tyndale University (BRE 2004, MDiv 2010) and brings his knowledge of the Bible, Christian history, and Intercultural Studies to his role as our pastor. His passions are for the spiritual health of the church, a renewed love for the Bible, an appreciation for historical and cultural context, reconciliation between cultures, and for lived-out discipleship.

Alicia enjoys teaching English for newcomers to Canada and homeschools their children, Renae and Luther. Renae loves animals and Luther enjoys learning about the world.

Greg and Alicia met in South Korea in 2007, where they were both employed as English teachers before each of their returns to Canada in 2008.

Our Faith heritage

Oak Ridges Church is part of a family of churches called Be In Christ Church of Canada (BIC, Formerly Brethren in Christ). The BIC began among a group of Mennonites affected by the Great Awakening in late 18th Century Pennsylvania. A group of these (nicknamed Tunkers) came north into Canada following the Revolutionary War.

The BIC has been influenced by key elements of several spiritual movements: the Wesleyan pursuit of holiness, the Pietist focus on individual devotion to Jesus, the Evangelical passion for spreading the gospel, and the Anabaptist emphasis on simplicity, peace-making, and following the teachings of Jesus in our lives.

Today, the BIC church has approximately 1,100 churches worldwide. We also work closely with the Mennonite Central Committee, the relief and development arm of Mennonite churches which responds compassionately to social needs around the world in the name of Christ.
